Prep Time: 15 minutes | Cook Time: 25-30 minutes | Total Time: 45 minutes | Makes: 16 squares

Butter apple crumble bars with oats and cinnamon close-up on a black surface, sweet baked dessert, homemade fruit crumble bar, crispy oat topping and caramelized apple filling, delicious breakfast or snack option.

Ingredients

Scale

  • 1 cup plain yogurt (unsweetened, no artificial sweeteners or xylitol)
  • 1 apple, peeled and grated (seeds and core completely removed for safety)
  • 1/2 cup oat flour (gentle, gluten-free binding for sensitive stomachs)
  • 1 egg (natural binding for perfect square texture)
  • 1 tsp honey (real honey only, safe for dogs over one year old)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and grease a square baking dish—don’t use too large a dish or squares will be too thin.
  2. Peel apple completely and grate finely, removing every single seed and all core material—apple seeds aren’t safe for dogs.
  3. Mix plain yogurt, grated apple, oat flour, egg, and honey until well combined and smooth throughout.
  4. Pour mixture into prepared square baking dish and spread evenly for uniform baking and perfect squares.
  5. Bake 25-30 minutes until set and lightly browned—start checking at 25 minutes to prevent overcooking.
  6. Cool completely before cutting into appropriately sized squares for your pup (patience creates perfect texture).

Notes:

  • Only give honey to dogs over one year old—substitute with mashed sweet potato for younger puppies
  • ALWAYS check yogurt labels for artificial sweeteners—xylitol is deadly for dogs
  • Amber prefers these with visible apple pieces for interesting texture

Storage Tips:

  • Store in refrigerator in airtight container for up to one week
  • Freeze individual squares for up to 2 months—perfect for ongoing probiotic benefits
  • Don’t leave out on counter—dairy and fruit spoil quickly without refrigeration

What Makes This Recipe Special:

These squares deliver beneficial probiotics from yogurt for digestive and immune health, natural fiber and vitamins from apples, and gentle energy from oat flour. The combination creates cake-like treats that taste like healthy dessert while providing live beneficial bacteria that support gut health and overall wellness.

Mix It Up (Dog-Safe Variations):

  • Extra Digestive Support: Add 1 tablespoon plain pumpkin puree for additional fiber and probiotic benefits
  • Fun Shape Version: Use cookie cutters after baking to create special shaped treats from the squares
  • Beta-Carotene Boost: Add tiny bit of grated carrot with the apple for extra vitamins and color
