Prep Time: 20 minutes | Cook Time: 20-25 minutes | Total Time: 45 minutes | Makes: 20-24 puffs

Chocolate chip and shredded carrot energy bites in a bowl, healthy dog treat recipe, homemade snack for dogs, Waggy Chef pet treats, nutritious and tasty for furry friends.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (8 oz) cooked sweet potato, mashed (bake until fork-tender for best texture)
  • 1/2 cup (4 oz) cooked black beans, mashed (rinse canned beans thoroughly – completely safe for dogs)
  • 1/4 cup (1 oz) oat flour (perfect for grain-sensitive dogs)
  • 1/4 cup (1 oz) shredded carrots (fresh is best for crunch and color)
  • 1 egg (any size works perfectly for binding)
  • 2 tbsp (1 oz) coconut oil, melted (adds richness and coat benefits)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper—these puffs can stick, so this prevents any cleanup issues.
  2. In a bowl, thoroughly mash your cooked sweet potato and black beans until relatively smooth but with some texture remaining.
  3. Add oat flour, shredded carrots, egg, and melted coconut oil to the mashed mixture and stir until well combined—mixture should hold together when scooped.
  4. Scoop out small portions and gently shape them into bite-sized puffs on your prepared baking sheet (I make mine walnut-sized for Amber).
  5. Bake for 20-25 minutes until puffs are firm and lightly golden—they should spring back lightly when touched but not feel mushy.
  6. Allow the puffs to cool completely before serving to your pup—this step prevents burns and lets the flavors develop perfectly.

Notes:

  • Always let sweet potatoes cool completely before mashing to prevent scrambling the egg
  • Puffs should be firm but cake-like, not dense or hard
  • Amber prefers these after they’ve been refrigerated and gotten slightly more tender
  • Perfect for dogs with grain sensitivities thanks to oat flour base

Storage Tips:

  • Store in airtight container in refrigerator for up to one week
  • These get slightly more cake-like after a day, which most dogs prefer
  • Freeze extras for up to 3 months—they thaw perfectly for future celebrations
  • Don’t leave out at room temperature for more than 2 hours due to vegetable content

What Makes This Recipe Special:

Three powerhouse vegetables combine to deliver complete nutrition in celebration-worthy form. Sweet potatoes provide natural sweetness and fiber, black beans offer plant-based protein, and carrots add beta-carotene for eye health. The coconut oil supports a healthy coat while creating that rich flavor dogs crave.

Mix It Up (Dog-Safe Variations):

Joint Support Golden Puffs: Add a pinch of turmeric for anti-inflammatory benefits and extra golden color (perfect for senior dogs like Amber)

Party Mini Bites: Use a melon baller to create tiny celebration treats perfect for training or parties without overfeeding

Summer Cooling Celebration: Freeze baked puffs for a refreshing treat that still delivers all the nutritional benefits during hot weather
