Delicious mackerel sushi on a silver platter, highlighting fresh seafood and Japanese cuisine, perfect for Sushi lovers and gourmet dining.

Ingredients

Scale

  • 1 cup cooked brown rice (tender and slightly sticky works best)
  • 1 can sardines in water, drained (pure fish nutrition without additives)
  • 2 cups low-sodium chicken broth (flavor and hydration without excess salt)

Instructions

  1. Make sure your brown rice is completely cooked and cooled—it should be tender and hold together when pressed.
  2. Drain sardines completely and add to food processor along with the cooked brown rice.
  3. Blend sardines and rice until mixture is completely smooth and creamy—no chunks should remain for even freezing.
  4. With processor running, slowly add low-sodium chicken broth until you get a smooth, pourable mixture.
  5. Pour mixture into ice cube trays, filling each compartment about 3/4 full to allow for expansion during freezing.
  6. Freeze until completely solid—they need to be frozen through for perfect crunch texture.
  7. Serve directly from freezer and always supervise your pup while they enjoy these omega-rich treats.

Notes:

  • Always use sardines packed in water only—avoid oil or sauce varieties
  • Amber prefers these completely frozen, but they’re great slightly softened too
  • Always supervise dogs with frozen treats to prevent choking

Storage Tips:

  • Store in freezer in airtight containers or freezer bags for up to 2 months
  • Pop out of trays once frozen for easier storage and access
  • Don’t let them sit out too long—they melt quickly and can get messy

What Makes This Recipe Special:

These cubes deliver concentrated omega-3 fatty acids from sardines for brain health and joint support, sustained energy and fiber from brown rice, and optimal hydration from low-sodium broth. The combination creates nutritionally complete frozen treats that support cognitive function, reduce inflammation, and promote coat health while providing cooling relief during hot weather.

Mix It Up (Dog-Safe Variations):

  • Joint Support Version: Substitute some chicken broth with bone broth for added collagen and minerals
  • Training Size Mini Cubes: Use smaller ice cube trays for bite-sized training rewards
  • Extra Rich Version: Add a tiny bit of coconut oil for additional healthy fats and antimicrobial benefits
