Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 medium sweet potato, cooked and mashed smooth (natural sweetness and vitamins – completely safe for dogs)
  • 1/2 cup (120g) plain unsweetened applesauce (natural fruit sweetness and vitamin C)
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) water (perfect pupsicle consistency)
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) plain low-fat yogurt (probiotics and calcium for digestive health)

Instructions

  1. Make sure your sweet potato is completely cooked, mashed smooth, and cooled to room temperature for optimal blending.
  2. In a blender, combine the mashed sweet potato, unsweetened applesauce, water, and plain yogurt, blending until completely smooth and creamy with no lumps.
  3. Pour the smooth mixture into ice cube trays or silicone molds, filling each compartment completely for perfect pupsicle portions.
  4. Freeze for at least 4 hours or until completely solid—they actually improve in texture after sitting overnight in the freezer.
  5. Pop out a pupsicle and serve to your heat-stressed pup for instant cooling relief and digestive support (if your overheated dog can wait for it to soften slightly).

Notes:

  • Let pupsicles soften for 2-3 minutes before serving if they seem too hard—dogs prefer them slightly softened for comfortable licking
  • These work perfectly for my 8-year-old Golden Retriever Amber because the cooling relief helps with temperature regulation while the probiotics support his sensitive digestion
  • Blend thoroughly for the smoothest, most ice cream-like texture that provides extended licking satisfaction

Storage Tips:

  • Store in freezer-safe containers or bags for up to 3 weeks to maintain perfect texture
  • Prevent freezer burn by wrapping individually or storing in airtight containers
  • Make big batches at the beginning of summer for consistent cooling relief throughout the season
  • Keep extras on hand for those unexpectedly hot days when instant cooling is needed

What Makes This Recipe Special:

These frozen sweet potato pupsicles combine natural cooling relief with digestive support through real whole food ingredients. The sweet potato provides natural energy replacement after heat stress, while yogurt offers probiotics for gut health when summer heat can affect appetite and digestion. Pure cooling comfort in naturally sweet, creamy form.

Mix It Up (Dog-Safe Cooling Variations):

  • Electrolyte Boost: Add 1 tablespoon fresh coconut water for additional hydration and tropical flavor
  • Extra Sweet: Include a tiny bit of honey for enhanced natural sweetness and comfort
  • Party Special: Make them in fun bone-shaped molds for special summer celebrations and backyard gatherings
