Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup cooked chicken, shredded (no seasonings or bones)
  • 1 cup sweet potato, cooked and mashed (roasted works best)
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats (old-fashioned, not instant)
  • 1 large egg (room temperature mixes easier)
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil, slightly melted (unrefined is best)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper—sweet potato can stick without it.
  2. Roast sweet potato at 400°F for 45 minutes until fork-tender, then cool and mash until smooth (way better flavor than boiling).
  3. Cook chicken by poaching or baking without any seasonings, then shred into small, safe pieces.
  4. In a bowl, mix shredded chicken, mashed sweet potato, rolled oats, egg, and slightly melted coconut oil until well combined and moldable.
  5. Scoop small portions and shape into bite-sized pieces—a small cookie scoop keeps them uniform.
  6. Arrange pieces on prepared baking sheet with space between each for even browning.
  7. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and crispy on the outside.
  8. Let them cool completely before serving (if your dog can handle the wait).

Notes:

  • Always let cool completely—hot treats can burn doggy mouths
  • Amber loves these extra crunchy, but adjust baking time if your dog prefers softer textures
  • Make sure sweet potato is well-drained to prevent mushy treats

Storage Tips:

  • Store in airtight container at room temperature for up to two weeks
  • Freeze for up to three months in freezer bags (great for batch making)
  • The coconut oil helps preserve them naturally longer than most homemade treats
  • Keep them dry—moisture will make them lose their crunch

What Makes This Recipe Special: These crunchies combine lean chicken protein with nutrient-rich sweet potato and wholesome oats for complete nutrition. The perfect crunchy texture keeps dogs engaged and motivated, while the natural ingredients support muscle health and digestion better than processed alternatives.

Mix It Up (Dog-Safe Variations):

Joint Support Version: Add 1/4 teaspoon turmeric for anti-inflammatory benefits (perfect for senior dogs like Amber) Training Size: Shape into pea-sized pieces for high-value training rewards that won’t fill them up Turkey Twist: Substitute half the chicken with ground turkey for variety and different protein sources
